Bright Okpocha’s ex-wife Elsie Uzoma, also known as Basketmouth, has pleaded with Nigerians to stop forcing women into marriage.
The mother of two, whose recent marriage to Basketmouth failed, posted a video to Instagram where she discussed the idea that women are constantly chastised for delaying marriage till a particular age.
It is important for people to understand that if a woman is single or unmarried, it is often because she is taking her time or hasn’t yet found the right partner.
She argued that getting married takes a lot of work, and if someone is forced to be married before they are ready, they might later hurry out of the marriage.
According to her, “I feel like it’s only in this part of the world that people make a big fuss about a woman not being married at a certain age.” You hear questions like, “Aunty, why are you not married?” Is she going to marry herself? Some even go so far as to ask, “Se you no go go born one? We need to understand that when a woman isn’t married, it is because she is taking time or hasn’t found the right one.”
