EEDC condemns the widespread bush burning that occurs during the harmattan season

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has condemned the South-East residents’ recent spate of bush burning, especially as the harmattan approaches.

The EEDC issued a warning while also reminding residents that the harmattan season is typically marked by a dryness of the environment, which makes it very simple for fire to spread at any given opportunity. This includes dry leaves, objects, and people.

Emeka Ezeh, the head of corporate communications at EEDC, said the dangers posed by fire outbreak during harmattan made the warning necessary.

Ezeh talked about the costs the business had incurred over the years as a result of unchecked, indiscriminate bush and garbage dump burning.

He emphasized that the power network crosses through bushes, forests, neighborhoods, and farmlands, and that any burning, if left unchecked, could cause a fire to break out and damage transformers, feeder pillar units, and the lines and their related accessories, as well as cause fatalities, interrupt the flow of electricity, and damage other properties.

“We have discovered that during harmattan season hunters deploy fire to drive bush animals out of their hiding places for easy catch or kill while some might be to enable farmers to prepare such lands for the next farming season.

“Whatever may be the intention behind bush burning, it is advised that such fires are controlled so they do not escalate to unintended locations or areas,” the EEDC stated.
