Security personnel foiled an assassination attempt by armed men suspected to be political thugs on a federal lawmaker representing the Esan North-East/Esan South-East Federal Constituency in Edo State, Henry Okojie.
In a statement released on Friday, Okojie’s media assistant, Michael Ihaza, confirmed the news. He stated that Okojie, the husband of Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson, was allegedly ambushed at home by assailants driving a Lexus GX 470 with the Rivers State license plate PHC 253 FF.
According to the statement, the planned murder “was unsuccessful due to the intervention of security personnel attached to the lawmaker.”
“The two armed thugs, posing as police officers, broke into Hon. Okojie’s home, claimed to be there by appointment, and then made their way to the sitting room.
“Following the intervention of the security personnel attached to the lawmaker, two of the armed thugs fled leaving behind the driver and another who are currently being interrogated by officers from the Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Uromi.
“Confessional statements from the suspects thus far have stated that People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in Esan North East Local Government Area sent them on the mission,” the statement continued.
Efforts to reach the Edo State Police Command for comments were not successful
