Ebira Traditional Wedding Engagement List Sparks Online Debate Over Cost

A Nigerian woman, Blessing Ahuoyiza, has ignited conversations on social media after sharing an Ebira traditional wedding engagement list presented to her uncle by his fiancée’s family.

According to Blessing, the list was handed over as part of the customary marriage rites required before the wedding can take place. However, its content — which many described as lengthy and costly — quickly drew widespread reactions online.

Sharing the list, Blessing expressed surprise at the number and perceived expense of the items involved. She humorously appealed to the community, writing:

“Dear some Ebira people, make una take it easy na.”

Her comment resonated with many Nigerians and triggered a wave of discussions about traditional marriage expectations and affordability.

While engagement lists are a common feature across many Nigerian cultures, social media users noted that this particular list appeared overwhelming, especially in today’s economic climate. Some defended the tradition as cultural heritage, while others questioned whether such requirements discourage marriage or place undue financial pressure on grooms and their families.
