After hours in detention, Nigerian musician Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, better known as D’banj, has been released.
D’banj’s legal counsel confirmed the development to SaharaReporters, noting that the singer was released on bail because he made himself available for investigation.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) detained D’banj at its office on Tuesday over alleged N-Power fraud.
According to VisioTalks, the singer will soon speak out about his alleged involvement in irregularities in the Federal Government’s empowerment scheme.
The ICPC previously reported that it had received numerous petitions regarding the diversion of N-Power funds worth billions of naira following the approval and release of such funds to beneficiaries by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
According to the anti-graft agency, many N-Power beneficiaries have been complaining about not receiving their monthly stipends despite the government’s confirmation of releasing the funds.
“About ten persons have been invited by the ICPC over the last few months in connection with the N-Power fraud and have been granted administrative bail after their detention. Several invitations to Mr Oladipo Daniel Oyebanjo to appear before a team of investigators were ignored and not honored.
“Mr Oyebanjo turned himself in and was taken into custody at the ICPC Headquarters on Tuesday, 6th December 2022, and is currently assisting the investigators in unraveling the circumstances of the fraud allegations by the petitioners,”Azuka Ogugua, ICPC spokesperson, said in a statement on Wednesday.
D’banj’s lawyers, on the other hand, confirmed to reporters that the singer was released on bail today.
“The musician intends to speak out soon,” a source told SaharaReporters.
