A couple has gone viral after sharing a hilarious parenting moment that many mothers and fathers say feels all too familiar.
According to the father, he and his wife decided to create a secret code word to maintain privacy around their five-year-old daughter. The agreed word? “Typewriter.” Whenever they wanted some alone time, they would casually refer to “typing a letter,” believing their child would remain blissfully unaware of the adult meaning behind it.
However, their clever plan quickly turned into a comedy show.
“I told my daughter, ‘Go tell mommy daddy needs to type a letter,’” the father recounted. “She came back and said, ‘Mommy says you can’t right now, there’s a red ribbon in the typewriter.’”
The couple realized their daughter had unknowingly become a very enthusiastic messenger — taking the phrase literally and running back and forth delivering detailed updates between both parents.
A few days later, history repeated itself.
“She ran to her mom and back to me,” the father said. “Then she returned and told her mom, ‘Daddy said never mind, he already wrote the letter by hand, it only took a minute, and he told me not to tell you!’”
The unexpected commentary left the couple stunned — and laughing.
The story has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many parents admitting they’ve attempted similar “code systems” only to discover that children are far more observant and perceptive than adults give them credit for.
Beyond the humor, the experience highlights a common parenting reality: maintaining privacy with young children in the house can be surprisingly complicated. From innocent interruptions to literal interpretations of adult language, kids often pick up on more than parents expect.
Still, for this couple, the situation has become a cherished family memory — one that proves sometimes the best parenting stories are the unplanned ones.
