Controversial cleric Chukwuemeka Odumeje has ignited online reactions after sharing his stance on DNA testing and paternity in marriage.
During a recent sermon, Odumeje advised men to avoid DNA tests, claiming that such practices clash with Igbo cultural beliefs about family and fatherhood.
“Desist from doing DNA. It’s against Igbo culture. Any child born by your wife regardless of who’s responsible belongs to you as long as nobody is coming out to claim it,” he said.
He added that as long as no one comes forward to claim the child, there’s no need for paternity testing, which he considers taboo in Igbo culture.
Public Reactions
The post quickly divided opinions online:
Supporters praised his emphasis on trust and cultural values in marriage. One user wrote, “I respect the stance. Family isn’t just about biology; it’s about love and responsibility.”
Critics argued that DNA tests ensure clarity and prevent future disputes. Another user commented, “This advice is dangerous. DNA tests protect everyone involved, not just the father.”
Some dismissed his claims about Igbo culture: “Where in Igbo culture is this? This man don start again,” another user joked.
Others highlighted the practical implications: “Ignoring paternity can cause problems down the line. DNA doesn’t disrespect culture; it prevents heartbreak.”
A few shared humorous takes: “So if your neighbor claims your child, are you just supposed to hand them over? Abeg, make sense o!”
The debate continues to trend online as people weigh cultural beliefs against modern practices in family life.
