Protesters stormed the National Assembly complex on Wednesday, March 5, demanding justice for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, causing chaos.
In a widely shared video, the protesters demanded that her claims of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio be thoroughly investigated.
The protest, which began as early as 8 a.m., coincided with a crucial hearing by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.
Senator Natasha was expected to appear before the panel amid the growing controversy surrounding her claims.
Security officers moved quickly to disperse the protesters with tear gas. The protesters reassembled at Abuja’s Unity Fountain and carried on their demonstration, demanding justice and accountability in spite of the police crackdown.
Days later, Natasha, in a televised interview, accused the Senate President of making inappropriate advances toward her.
She alleged that Akpabio once told her to offer him “enjoyment” in exchange for the passage of a bill, adding that her husband is one of the witnesses to the incident.
