In a startling account of purported fraud, a Nigerian tenant claimed that the building’s caretaker had charged tenants N1.3M in lieu of the rent that the landlord had set.
Unaware that the actual rent was only ₦500,000, the tenant, who goes by the handle @Drweloveu on X (formerly Twitter), disclosed that he and other tenants had been paying ₦1.3 million a year for their apartments.
According to his account, the landlord recently made an unexpected visit to the property, which the tenants interpreted as an opportunity to bargain for a lower rent. But everyone was stunned by what came next.
“Atanda, you won’t believe that the landlord was shocked to hear that we are paying ₦1.3M. He claims that what the caretaker sends to him is ₦500k each, and that is what he told him to collect from us,” he wrote.
He went on to say that the landlord promised to handle the situation and assured them that their rent moving forward would be reduced to the correct ₦500,000.
However, the tenant is now seeking justice and reimbursement for the massive overpayment. Over the past three years, the alleged overcharge amounts to ₦800,000 per year, totaling ₦2.4 million.
“What I want to know now is: Can I take up a case of fraud against the caretaker so that he will refund me my balance of ₦800k for 3 years, which is ₦2.4M?” he asked.
The post has sparked widespread outrage and discussions online, with many users demanding accountability and calling for legal action against the caretaker.

@choji_ES: Why not just live in the house for the next 3 years and not pay anymore.
@SimoncoleB: That’s between the landlord and the caretaker. You can sue the landlord tho because it’s his house
@yeatybabe: E no concern u, just pay ur 500k n move on with life.
@ideniyor: What did you sign in your rental agreement? If you signed 1.5m, then you have no standing to sue otherwise. The landlord can sue the caretaker for fraud. Not you. And not, you can’t live in there for free for the next three years.
@0x_Dbad_: I love your energy sir. Please if it possible sue the mf!!! The rate of extortion by agent/caretakers is alarming! I wonder why landlords make use of agents sef
@phemidawhiz: That’s a criminal right there. He should be arrested and made to refund people’s money. Caretakers and agents are some of the problems we have in the country. No matter how busy one is as a landlord, check your house at least twice a year and ask your tenants questions.
