Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has confirmed that the Nigerian national team are returning home after being stranded at Libya’s Al Abaq airport.
Prior to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against the Mediterranean Knights on Tuesday, the team had arrived in the nation.
The Super Eagles announced they would boycott the game as a result of the circumstances, citing mistreatment by Libyan authorities.
In response to the incident, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) received a formal protest from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Updating fans via his X account, Troost-Ekong said, “Power of social media. Apparently, our plane is being fueled as we speak and we should be leaving to Nigeria shortly. Thanks for everyone’s support!”
The Super Eagles captain also emphasized that Nigeria would never treat a guest nation similarly.
“Mistakes happen, delays happen. But never on purpose!” he added, expressing disappointment over the ordeal.
