The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has chastised Lagos State University for prohibiting the sale of bread on its campus other than that produced by the university’s bakery. It claimed that the LASU declaration was in violation of the Competition Act.
The FCCPC warned the school not to encourage unhealthy competition in bread sales on campus.
According to the FCCPC’s executive vice-chairman, Babatunde Irukera, monopolizing bread sales on university grounds violates the FCCPA’s competition law.
He went on to say that the university administration was not exempt from the law.
“I’m afraid this could be a violation of competition law.” It is a violation of the FCCPA to limit competition in this manner. LASU is not exempt because governments are also subject when they conduct business. “I’m guessing this statement doesn’t say what it says,” Mr Irukera tweeted.
On Wednesday, LASU shared a photo of Vice Chancellor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bell holding branded bread from the LASU bakery.
The school announced the opening of the new bakery and warned that “LASU bread will henceforth be the only bread on the university’s main campus, Ojo.”
The university tweeted using the handle @LASUOfficial, “Accolades for the VC, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, as LASU Bakery opens for business. The bakery is part of her administration’s drive to increase IGR. The LASU Bread will henceforth be the only bread on the university’s main campus, Ojo.”
