Beating Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup would be something extraordinary – Gasperini

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has said it would be something extraordinary to beat Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

Atalanta would feature in a a first-ever Super Cup thanks to their 3-0 win against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final.

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman was the hero for Gasperini’s side after netting a hat-trick.

On their part, Madrid landed a record-extending 15th Champions League title courtesy of a 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund.

The Los Blancos have also added the Super Cup to their collections in previous fixtures.

Atalanta and Madrid will now square off on August 14 in Poland for the Super Cup tie.

In a recent interview, Gasperini said winning the Super Cup will be Atalanta’s next big goal.

“The European Super Cup is our next dream,” Gasperini was quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

“Since we had this opportunity, without taking anything away from Borussia Dortmund, the hope was to face Real Madrid for a matter of prestige.

“Real are the most famous team in the world. Going to compete with them for a Super Cup is something prestigious for Atalanta and for all of Bergamo.

“It would be something extraordinary. Even Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen had not lost for a long time, perhaps due to the law of large numbers. For now, we will stick to this.”
