From The Standard
Arsenal overcame a goal deficit to defeat Southampton 3-1 thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli in the final ten minutes of the second half.
After Cameron Archer gave Southampton the lead, Mikel Arteta’s team faced an unexpected loss in the same week that Bukayo Saka declared he thought Arsenal would defeat Manchester City to win the Premier League.
However, Havertz pulled the Gunners even three minutes later, and after 68 minutes, the hosts added a second goal through substitute Martinelli.
Southampton almost hit back – striking David Raya’s woodwork twice in one minute – but Saka made sure of the points with two minutes remaining on another pivotal afternoon in north London. The Gunners remain level on points with rivals’ City, and one shy of leaders’ Liverpool.
Arsenal returned to the Emirates four days after their thrilling victory over Paris St. Germain to take on a team that had only managed one point from their first six games.
Aaron Ramsdale, who made 78 appearances for the Gunners in the Premier League, returned to the Emirates, and after just seven minutes, the Saints goalkeeper was relieved that his careless clearance was exploited by his previous employers.
The ball fell to Declan Rice, who played in Gabriel Jesus. Raheem Sterling was in the box, trying to pull the trigger on his first Premier League start wearing an Arsenal shirt, but he was unable to get a shot off.
Despite having a lot of possession, the visitors managed to get the first shot on goal.
Saka’s clearing header fell only to Kyle Walker-Peters. The defender’s shot, however, was straight down Raya’s throat.
