Popular Nigerian doctor and health influencer, Dr. Chinonso Egemba, widely known as Aproko Doctor, has reacted to the tragic death of fast-rising singer Ifunanya, popularly called Nanyah, sparking renewed outrage over Nigeria’s emergency healthcare system.
Earlier reports had claimed that the young singer passed away in the early hours of today after suffering a snake bite at her residence. The news has continued to generate widespread reactions across social media.
Reacting to the incident, Aproko Doctor clarified that snake bites are not automatically fatal, noting that victims across the world often survive when they receive timely and proper medical care.
According to him, reports indicate that Nanyah was taken to two different hospitals, but both facilities allegedly turned her away, claiming they did not have antivenom available.
“In a country where snakes live, it is unacceptable for hospitals to tell patients they cannot be saved because basic medicines are unavailable. This is not the 1980s,” he said.
The health influencer further revealed that Nigeria already has a locally developed antivenom known as EchiTab, which is specifically designed to treat bites from common Nigerian snakes. However, he lamented that the life-saving drug was reportedly unavailable in the hospitals the singer visited.
Aproko Doctor also criticised the government’s approach to healthcare, accusing authorities of focusing on flyovers and ultra-modern hospitals while neglecting primary healthcare centres, which should serve as the first and most critical point of emergency response.
“We have completely forgotten the basics of healthcare, and it is costing young lives like Nanyah every single day,” he added.
He further condemned online narratives blaming the incident on spiritual snakes or mystical causes, stressing that such explanations only distract from the real, systemic failures responsible for preventable deaths.
The doctor urged Nigerians to begin asking hard questions about why hospitals lack antivenom, why ambulances are scarce, and why primary healthcare centres remain poorly equipped despite their importance.
The tragic passing of Nanyah has once again reignited serious concerns about Nigeria’s emergency healthcare system and how avoidable deaths continue to occur due to long-standing neglect.
