Nollywood actress Annie Idibia has addressed growing conversations surrounding her marital status following her separation from Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba.
The actress, who has remained in the public eye since news of their split surfaced, took to her Instagram story to clarify how she prefers to be described.
In the post, Annie wrote:
“I’m not a single mom. I’m a single woman raising two kids.”
Her statement quickly sparked widespread reactions across social media, with many users sharing differing opinions about the wording and the perspective behind her clarification.
Public Reactions Trail Annie’s Statement
Several social media users weighed in on the discussion, interpreting her words in different ways.
Victoria wrote:
“Words matter. ‘Single mom’ and ‘single woman raising kids’ carry different perspectives, and her clarification is very important.”
Queen commented:
“My gender can be quite funny and interesting sometimes. Just think about how divorce humbled Annie. She used to make her husband’s life miserable, kicked out all his friends, and turned him into a guest in his own home. Musical career was gone. She’s now literally a ghost without him. I hope my gender learns that men are actually the prize. ‘Single mum. Single woman’. What’s the grammatical difference abeg?”
Zinny offered a different view:
“Annie isn’t a single mom. She’s a woman thriving while raising her kids. But society loves to reduce women to labels instead of celebrating them.”
HealthGuide also defended her position:
“I don’t see anything wrong with her statement. She chose what she wants and there is nothing anybody can do about it. She is a woman thriving in her own little world, encouraging herself and building her own castles.”
Chief & Queen added:
“Annie said it loud! 🔥 It’s interesting how a mother steps up, moves beyond just ‘mom,’ and wants to be recognized as a single woman.”
Why Her Words Are Sparking Debate
The debate mainly centers on how society labels women who raise children outside a marriage or after separation.
“Single mom” often implies a woman raising children without a partner involved.
“Single woman raising kids” can suggest that she is not married but still sees herself first as an individual woman, not defined only by motherhood.
For some people, Annie’s clarification is about identity and self-definition, while others see little difference between the two phrases.
