Anambra government seals buildings, hotels over environmental pollution concerns

The Anambra State Government through the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, has sealed hotels and other business premises over environmental concerns and disobedience to court summons.

The Managing Director of OCHA Brigade, Celestine Anere, who led the enforcement team on Sunday, said the action was necessitated by the flagrant disobedience to environmental laws by some hotels and leisure centre operators in the state.

Anere said the enforcement was due to a public outcry over the environmental state of the areas where the businesses are located.

He noted that the issue of disobeying environmental laws has become a perennial problem that is posing a serious threat to the sanity of the environment and the ecosystem in general.

He said, “More enforcement teams have been created to avail residents the opportunity to report any environmental issues around their communities

“The state government has declared zero tolerance to environmental pollution and we are poised to safeguarding and upholding every government policy that will promote the vision of a clean, green, healthy, livable and prosperous homeland in the state.”

It was gathered that most of the affected business premises were located in Awka and environs.

The sealing of the premises came after weeks of court notices served by the agency and the Ministry of Environment on them.
