“All These Men Are Aka Gum” — Nigerian Lady Laments Changing Dating Culture

A Nigerian lady has sparked heated reactions on social media after expressing frustration over what she described as the growing stinginess of men in today’s dating scene.

In a viral video circulating online, the woman reminisced about what she called the “good old days,” when men were more generous and eager to foot the bill whenever they accompanied women to restaurants or outings.

According to her, it used to be normal for men to insist on paying, often dismissing a woman’s attempt to bring out her wallet with sweet lines and confidence. However, she believes those days are long gone.

She contrasted that past with a recent personal experience that left her disappointed. The lady revealed that she went out to buy shawarma worth ₦3,000, yet not a single man offered to pay for it.

Visibly annoyed, she described modern men as “aka gum” — a popular slang implying extreme stinginess — while questioning what she sees as a major shift in dating norms and social expectations.

In her words:

“Before when you get to a restaurant men would offer to pay for what you want, like ‘Fine girl, leave your money, I’ll pay’. I went to get shawarma of ₦3K but nobody offered to pay for me. All these men are aka gum.”

As expected, her comment triggered mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that dating culture has changed, while others argued that economic realities and evolving gender roles mean women should be ready to pay their own bills.
