Aisha Buhari drops the case against critic Aminu

The First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has dropped the case against Aminu Adamu, a final-year student at the Federal University of Dutse.

Adamu, 24, was arrested by police in Dutse for allegedly publishing a defamatory statement about Mrs Buhari on his Twitter handle.

Adamu, who is studying Environmental Management, allegedly posted a rotund picture of the first lady with the caption “Mama is feeding fat on poor people’s money” in the alleged offensive tweet.

On June 8, 2022, the tweet was sent. He was arraigned on Tuesday before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, where he pleaded not guilty and was remanded at Suleja prison in Niger State, after nearly two weeks in detention and alleged torture.

However, the prosecution counsel, Fidelis Ogbobe, stated on Friday that the First Lady, as the mother of the nation, decided to withdraw the case after the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians.

He moved the application for case withdrawal under Section 108 subsection 2(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

In his decision, Justice Yusuf Halilu of the FCT High Court praised Mrs Buhari for taking “brave steps” to forgive the accused.

He urged parents to constantly monitor their children in order to prevent recurrence.
