₦40k Salary Offer Sparks Online Outrage as Nigerian Business Owner Defends Herself

A Nigerian business owner has ignited heated debate on social media after publicly defending her decision to offer a ₦40,000 monthly salary for a sales representative role.

The controversy followed backlash from online users who described the pay as exploitative. Reacting in a viral TikTok video shared by @timmy_ally, the business owner expressed shock at the criticism, insisting the job is far less demanding than people claim.

According to her, the position runs from Monday to Saturday, 8:30am to 6pm, but involves minimal stress. She explained that the sales rep would mostly sit in the shop, handle deliveries twice a week—on Wednesdays and Saturdays—and occasionally drop off packages in Ikeja.

She further clarified that transportation would be fully covered, emphasizing that the employee would not be required to spend personal funds on errands.

Addressing assumptions about customer traffic, the business owner noted that the shop rarely receives walk-in customers.

“In the last three months, I can count how many people walked in to buy. My customers are online. I pack like 10 orders daily, all online,” she said.

In a move that further fueled reactions, she revealed that she does not even pay herself up to ₦40,000 monthly as the business owner, stressing that small businesses are currently struggling.

She concluded with a blunt remark that has since gone viral:

“Some of you will go and work with Dangote. It’s not me. I don’t pass my power. I beg.”

The video has continued to draw mixed reactions online. While some users criticized the offer—one commenter wrote, “₦40k for one month is wild”—others came to her defense, arguing that many small businesses are barely surviving in the current economy.

The debate remains ongoing as Nigerians clash over fair wages, work conditions, and the realities facing small business owners.
