“₦40k Is an Insult”: Nigerian Lady Sparks Debate Over ‘Small’ Monthly Allowances

A Nigerian lady has ignited heated conversations online after questioning why some men give their partners what she described as a very low monthly allowance, especially in the face of Nigeria’s rising cost of living.

In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the visibly stunned woman wondered how a man could look at his partner and decide that ₦40,000 was sufficient to cater for her monthly needs.

“How can a man look you finish and decide it is ₦40k you deserve as your monthly allowance?” she asked. “What can ₦40k buy in this market?”

According to her, the problem is not always the men alone. She argued that some women unintentionally set themselves up for financial neglect by constantly downplaying their needs in the name of being understanding.

“Na una go marry husband tomorrow and start telling the man, ‘I don’t like to make my hair, weavons are too expensive, let’s save money.’ Na you cause am,” she added.

Her remarks quickly divided social media users, sparking intense debates across timelines.

While many women agreed with her stance, insisting that ₦40,000 cannot even cover basic expenses in today’s economy, others pushed back, arguing that allowances should be based on a man’s financial capacity and mutual agreement—not entitlement or online pressure.

One user commented, “₦40k no even reach groceries for two weeks 😭.”

Another disagreed, saying, “Allowance is not compulsory. Relationship no be salary work.”

As expected, the conversation continues to trend, touching on broader issues of financial expectations, gender roles, and communication in modern Nigerian relationships.
