Man jailed after placing ₦78,000 bet without money to pay

A Nigerian man has talked about his upsetting experience of being detained and imprisoned by a betting site for wagering ₦78,000 without having the money to pay.

The man revealed this in a widely shared TikTok video in which he described how his biggest gambling error landed him in jail.

He claims that after placing a wager of ₦78,000, the betting site reported him to the authorities, which resulted in his apprehension.

After that, he was held at the station and was denied visits from his loved ones for a number of weeks.

He described his experience, saying that he only managed to survive because one of his cellmates had a guest who would sometimes share food and water with him.

In his words: “I went to prison because of gambling. One of the gambling platforms took me to prison. I played a game worth ₦78,000 and couldn’t pay.”

It happened on a Friday, so I spent about a week in the police cell without food or water. My only source of food was from my cellmate’s visitor who brought meals and pure water. None of my family members or friends came to see me.”

As the video gained traction online, concerned individuals flooded the comment section to share their thoughts.
