The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have initiated a formal investigation into claims of maltreatment of Super Eagles in Libya.
Due to the host country allegedly interfering with their travel arrangements, the Nigerian team was left stranded at Al Abraq International Airport for more than 13 hours.
Also keep in mind that the Super Eagles have subsequently withdrawn from the African Cup of Nations qualifier that was scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
The team will immediately take a chartered flight back to Nigeria after withdrawing from the AFCON qualifying match, as confirmed by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Meanwhile, CAF have issued a statement on condemning the reported treatment, calling it “disturbing and unacceptable.”
In the event that any violations of CAF’s statutes or regulations are verified, the organization has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation and to impose the necessary sanctions.
“CAF views the disturbing and unacceptable experiences of the Nigerian National Football Team (“Super Eagles”) at an airport in Libya in a very serious light.
“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (“Super Eagles”) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities.
“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.“
