Two cases of the fatal Mpox infection have been confirmed in the state by the Rivers State Government.
At a press conference in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Health Commissioner Dr. Adaeze Oreh verified the development.
Oreh said that in order to be ready for any emergencies, the state had already placed its Public Health Emergency Operations Center on high alert.
“Recently, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control stated that there are 39 confirmed cases of mpox across the country.
“Out of this number, Rivers State has two confirmed cases of Mpox.
“Our medical teams have been dispatched to address any emergency at the healthcare level, including both general and specialty hospitals,” the spokesperson stated.
Oreh stated that the state government had organized resources to track down every instance of Mpox cases throughout the state and had implemented an incident plan for the disease.
She said that in order to effectively monitor and combat the infection, the ministry had hired and trained ad hoc staff.
“At all levels of our healthcare pillar, the ad hoc staff can now respond to this infection,” the spokesperson stated.
