Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, has categorically refuted a sensationalized report claiming he had defrauded a woman in the United States of $180,000.
The controversy began when a well-known blogger said on X that the revered monarch had received the substantial payment in an alleged marriage scam from a woman named Fagbule, who was born in Osun.
The voicenote-laced article also claimed that the victim, an Ile-Ife native, was well-known to the traditional monarch and had attempted to arrange free medical care for women and children in her area before being duped.
Moses Olafare, the spokesperson for Ogunwusi, responded angrily to the charges on Facebook, labeling them as “fake, untrue, and unfounded.”
The monarch adamantly denied having a personal relationship with Fagbule, claiming that cunning con artists masquerading as him had tricked her.
Going a step further, Ogunwusi cautioned women not to fall for con artists because of their intense desire to get married.
A portion of the statement read;
“That the news as posted by a Twitter (now X) handle called “99% OPPRESSED” is fake, untrue, and absolutely an unfounded allegation only adopted as a nugatory character assassination tactic aimed at achieving a cheap popularity with a view to drawing huge followers/traffic for avaricious monetization from Twitter (X)”
