There is a trending video of Nigerians being burnt by soldiers together with their household items like logs of wood. The soldiers were taking pictures. I fear that posting the gory pictures might offend Facebook rules.
What are the Nigerian authorities doing about it? This incident should be investigated and the erring soldiers brought to book. Whether dead or alive, humans must be treated with dignity. It is called crime against humanity to target a population for destruction or degrading and inhuman treatment.
What is more, the lack of civility and respect for human life shown in this video will be displayed in other areas and aspects of our society by the same soldiers and others who watch the video and are made to believe that the behavior is normal or even heroic. The world is a cycle. What you set up ultimately comes back to you. What you set before the people is what they become. A society that wishes to see peace and orderliness cannot afford to permit conduct as horrible as this.
We must always affirm our humanity by rejecting inhuman conduct no matter by whom and no matter the circumstance or touted justification. We cannot breed beasts as soldiers and expect to live as civilized people in peaceful communities. One day, one way or the other, the beasts would turn on us, if we do not tame them now. We must remember how a man was recently mauled to death by his own dogs. If we retain wild dogs for soldiers, we only place our society and our lives in collective danger.
