In his spiritual testament, the late former Pope Benedict XVI begged for pardon from those he “wronged,” which was published by the Vatican on Sunday.
The former pope, who was of German descent, passed away at age 95 on Saturday.
He succeeded Pope John Paul II in 2005 and was the first pope to resign in roughly six centuries. He was born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger.
Benedict XVI referred to the “dark and exhausting stretches” of his journey as a necessary experience for his salvation in the testament dated August 29, 2006.
He gave praise to God for catching him whenever he started to “slip.”
“To all those whom I have wronged in any way, I ask forgiveness from my heart,” the letter read in part.
