A Nigerian lady has shared an awkward experience from a friend’s birthday celebration that left her feeling embarrassed and eventually annoyed.
According to a post on X by @itohan_olat, she attended the party prepared to celebrate her friend and brought ₦20,000 in ₦200 notes to spray during the festivities.
Things reportedly changed when another guest approached and began spraying larger denominations, including ₦500 and ₦1,000 notes, into the celebrant’s basket. Feeling overshadowed by the display, she decided to stop spraying, returned the remaining money to her bag, and quietly returned to her seat.
Despite her disappointment, she chose not to leave immediately.
“But I didn’t get angry and leave immediately. I sat down, and made sure I sampled every available food before finally leaving in annoyance,” she wrote.
Her story quickly generated mixed reactions online, with many debating whether her response was justified.

One commenter, Ruthiana, argued that friendships should not be measured by the value of gifts or money, describing it as poor behavior to treat people differently based on how much they contribute.
Another user, Al Altha, questioned why she was upset at all, suggesting that the arrival of bigger denominations simply allowed her to save some of her money while still enjoying the event.
MisGaj criticized her reaction, stating that every contribution counts regardless of denomination and noting that some guests may not have sprayed any money at all.
Brown Sugar, however, said she would have reacted similarly, joking that she would have kept her remaining cash and taken a seat as well.
