Man Raises Alarm After Brother Suffers Kidney Complications Following Malaria Treatment

A Nigerian man has sparked concern online after revealing that his younger brother allegedly developed severe kidney complications after taking medication prescribed for malaria treatment.

According to the viral social media post, the victim is currently hospitalized and receiving intensive medical care after reacting badly to the drugs administered for malaria.

The distressed relative shared photos from the hospital ward showing the young man lying on a bed and connected to medical equipment reportedly used for dialysis treatment.

“This is my little brother. The malaria drug he was given led to his kidney issues. May God punish every single person involved in manufacturing fake drugs in Nigeria,” the man wrote online.

Although the family did not mention the hospital involved, the exact medication used, or when the incident occurred, the post has reignited public fears over the circulation of counterfeit and substandard drugs in Nigeria.

“This is heartbreaking. Nobody takes malaria drugs expecting to end up with kidney failure. We just want justice and stronger regulation so this doesn’t happen to another family,” the relative added.

Nigeria has long struggled with the problem of fake medications, particularly antimalarial drugs and antibiotics. Health authorities have repeatedly warned that counterfeit medicines pose serious risks, including organ damage, treatment failure, and death.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has previously cautioned Nigerians against purchasing medications from unlicensed vendors and open markets.

Medical experts also continue to advise the public to buy drugs only from registered pharmacies and recognized hospitals to reduce exposure to fake or poorly stored medications.

Reactions Online

Social media users flooded the comment section with sympathy, anger, and concern over the growing issue of counterfeit drugs in the country.

“This is scary because malaria is so common in Nigeria. Imagine treating malaria and ending up on dialysis.”

“Fake drugs are silently killing people every day. Authorities need to do more.”

“May God heal him completely. This is painful to watch.”

“People selling fake medications deserve life imprisonment.”

“This is why I only buy drugs from trusted pharmacies no matter the cost.”
