Widowhood, Inheritance and Family Violence: Woman Shares Painful Ordeal After Father’s Death

A woman has shared a heartbreaking account of alleged abuse and dispossession following her father’s death, claiming that his relatives seized his belongings and subjected her mother and siblings to severe intimidation.

The story, which emerged on social media this week, has reignited discussions around inheritance rights, widow protection and domestic family violence in Nigeria.

According to her, the ordeal began immediately after her father passed away, when members of his extended family allegedly took over his properties and personal possessions, leaving his wife and children vulnerable.

She said the harassment soon intensified, creating an atmosphere of fear and emotional trauma.

When my dad died, his family took every single thing that belonged to him, down to his slippers. My paternal grandma would constantly harass my mum and tell her to leave the house because she does not have a penis beside her vagina. She said the only reason she tolerated my mum was because of her son, and since he is dead, she had no reason to tolerate her anymore.”

She further alleged that violence and threats became a regular part of their lives.

“My uncle once chased me with a machete. He also poured my mum’s food meant for selling into the gutter. My mum’s leg almost got amputated after an accident on the day she went house hunting. It became too much for us to bear.”

Eventually, she said her family fled the home in search of safety and chose to change their surname in order to break away from the traumatic past and start over.

The story has triggered widespread sympathy online, with many Nigerians condemning harmful widowhood practices, toxic inheritance traditions and the lack of stronger legal protections for bereaved families.

The incident also reflects broader concerns, as inheritance disputes in Nigeria have repeatedly exposed widows and children to exploitation, violence and prolonged legal struggles. Many advocates continue to call for stronger enforcement of family protection laws and cultural reforms to prevent such tragedies.
