Businessman Raises Alarm Over Alleged ₦1.5M Transfer Scam Attempt in His Shop

A Nigerian businessman has sparked widespread reactions online after recounting how a lady allegedly tried to involve him in a suspicious money transfer scheme at his shop.

The incident, which has gone viral on social media, highlights the growing concerns around fraudulent tactics and the risks unsuspecting individuals face in everyday business transactions.

According to the businessman, the lady visited his shop to purchase clothes worth ₦15,000. After selecting a shirt and a polo, she requested his account details to complete the payment.

However, her actions during the transaction raised suspicion. She reportedly stepped outside multiple times to make phone calls, allegedly confirming whether the money had been sent.

Moments later, the businessman received an alert of ₦1.5 million instead of the expected ₦15,000—immediately signaling that something was wrong.

When questioned, the lady claimed the overpayment was due to a network error. She later suggested using part of the money to buy additional items, leaving a large balance behind.

Things became more suspicious when she provided a different bank account to receive the remaining balance, instead of the original account that made the transfer.

Refusing to comply, the businessman insisted that any refund must be sent back to the same account that initiated the transaction. After some hesitation and calls, the lady eventually provided the original account details, and he promptly refunded the full ₦1.5 million.

He then declined to complete the sale and asked her to leave.

Sharing his experience, he warned others to remain cautious:

No matter what you want to buy in my shop, pay the exact amount. No add, no remove.”

Reactions Online

The story has since triggered mixed reactions, with many Nigerians praising the businessman’s caution while others shared similar experiences and warnings:

“Them no know say e don cast. If you mistakenly send money, it must go back to the same account. If not, OYO is your case.”

“Next time, he should report to the police. That might not be the end of the whole issue.”

“Never hotspot a stranger. If anything happens, your IP address will be traced.”

“This could be money from kidnapping. People don’t understand how dangerous this is.”

“He did the right thing. People have been arrested before for unknowingly helping criminals transfer money.”

Why This Matters

Incidents like this reflect a growing trend of alleged fraud schemes where unsuspecting business owners are used as intermediaries to move illicit funds. Experts often advise:

  • Always verify the source of unexpected transfers
  • Never send money to a different account than the sender’s
  • Report suspicious transactions to authorities immediately
  • Avoid assisting strangers with sensitive services like internet access during financial transactions

The businessman’s decision to insist on proper procedure likely saved him from potential legal trouble or involvement in criminal activity.
