Rep. Alhassan Ado Doguwa Calls for National Assembly Shutdown Over Insecurity

A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has called for the immediate shutdown of the National Assembly of Nigeria over the worsening security situation across the country.

Speaking during plenary at the House of Representatives of Nigeria, Doguwa urged lawmakers to suspend legislative activities until the Federal Government takes decisive action to protect lives and property nationwide.

“Pay the Supreme Cost”

Doguwa argued that legislative work has become meaningless while citizens continue to face daily violence, displacement, hunger, and fear.

“If the government is not prepared to actually do the right thing that will protect the lives and property of our people, I urge this honourable House to stand up and pay the supreme cost, which is to shut this House down and wait until the right thing is done,” he said.

He emphasized that security remains the primary responsibility of the Federal Government and insisted that the scale of violence requires extraordinary action from lawmakers representing affected communities.

Not Religious, Not Political — A Coordinated Threat?

The lawmaker dismissed claims that insecurity is driven by religion, politics, or ethnicity. Instead, he described it as a calculated attempt to destabilize the Nigerian state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“This insecurity is not religious, it is not political, and it has nothing to do with tribe. It is a calculated attempt to demoralise the Nigerian state,” Doguwa stated.

He warned that failure to act decisively could leave public office holders with serious questions to answer in the future.

“Who Are We Legislating For?”

Doguwa further questioned the relevance of continuing legislative business while communities suffer:

Farmers unable to access their farmlands

Traders afraid to open markets

Worshippers unable to attend churches and mosques

“Declare a legislative emergency. Close the House. Who are you legislating for? What laws are you making when the country is running in blood and tears?” he asked.

His remarks add to mounting public pressure on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to urgently tackle insecurity across the country.
