A Nigerian man has ignited conversations on social media after revealing how he advised his security guard to break up with his girlfriend just days before Valentine’s Day.
The story, shared on X (formerly Twitter), drew mixed reactions from users who questioned both his interpretation of scripture and the appropriateness of his advice.
How the Conversation Started
According to the man’s post, he noticed that his security guard appeared unusually unhappy while on duty. When he inquired about the issue, the guard reportedly confessed that he was broke.
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, the guard said he felt pressured because his girlfriend was expecting gifts and a celebration. Lacking the financial means to meet those expectations, he admitted he was deeply worried.
The Advice That Sparked Controversy
Rather than encouraging the guard to have an honest conversation with his partner or manage expectations, the man said he warned him against celebrating Valentine’s Day altogether.
He described Valentine’s Day as “unscriptural,” calling it a sin and “a tool of manipulation by the devil in today’s generation.” He also cautioned the guard against what he termed philistinism in the name of love.
To support his stance, he reportedly cited a biblical verse that says if your eye causes you to sin, you should pluck it out — suggesting that the guard’s romantic relationship could lead him into actions contrary to God’s will.
The man further advised him to end the relationship before Saturday, warning that failure to do so could bring “doom.”
The Guard’s Response
Later that evening, the guard allegedly returned with news that he had called his girlfriend and ended the relationship, even quoting scriptures during the conversation.
According to the man, the guard said he felt relieved after “letting go of the burden of love and Valentine.”
In celebration of what he described as a spiritual victory, the man said he congratulated the guard and treated him to poundo and egusi soup. The guard then reportedly returned to his duty post “all smiles.”
Mixed Reactions Online
The story quickly gained traction online, with many users expressing divided opinions.
While some praised the man for standing by his religious beliefs, others criticized him for encouraging a breakup over financial pressure and for imposing his personal convictions on someone else’s relationship.
