A Lagos-based woman has sparked intense debate online after revealing that her husband allegedly paid his mother a monthly allowance of ₦150,000 for four years — despite their family battling financial hardship.
According to her message, which was addressed to a lawyer, the couple have been married for four years and live in Gbagada, Lagos. Throughout their marriage, she said they struggled financially, often relying on “ajo” (local savings groups) and loans just to meet their annual rent.
The woman detailed the sacrifices she made to support the household. She claimed she had not changed her hairstyle in three months and rarely bought new clothes, all to ensure their toddler’s school fees were paid.
Her shock came when she reportedly saw a bank notification on her husband’s phone showing a standing order of ₦150,000 labeled “Mama’s Allowance.” She said the transfer had been made consistently every month for four years without her knowledge — amounting to nearly ₦2 million annually.
When she confronted him, her husband allegedly defended the payments, saying:
“I am the first son, her blessings are why I even have a job.”
According to her, he also accused her of being “bitter” after she described the arrangement as financial infidelity.
Feeling betrayed and overwhelmed, the woman said she has temporarily moved to her sister’s house as tensions escalated. She added that she now questions whether seeking a divorce would be justified, stating that she feels “married to him AND his mother.”
The revelation has since ignited widespread reactions, with many Nigerians divided over issues of family responsibility, transparency in marriage, and cultural expectations placed on first sons.
