A young lady has stirred conversations online after sharing a deeply personal story about a man who sponsored her university education, even though she never loved him romantically.
According to her account, she met the man during her first year at the university when she was facing serious financial hardship and unsure how to continue her studies. At the time, she said he reassured her not to worry and promised to support her throughout her education.
She revealed that the man lived up to his promise, sending her money weekly and paying for major expenses, including her school fees, textbooks, and hostel accommodation. Despite his consistent generosity, the lady admitted that she never developed romantic feelings for him and only felt gratitude for his kindness.
Trouble arose in her final year when the man asked her to visit him after her last examination. Sensing that he intended to propose marriage, she said she became uncomfortable and conflicted.
Rather than confront him directly or explain how she felt, she chose a different path. She told him she would come the following morning, but instead packed her belongings that same night and left early the next day without informing him.
Reflecting on the incident, the lady questioned whether her actions made her a bad person or whether she simply did what she felt was necessary to protect herself.
In her words:
“Sometimes I wonder if I’m a terrible person or I did what I had to do. I met this guy when I was in 100 level. I was broke. I don’t have money to continue my education. And he said I should not worry. He’s going to take care of me through my education. He’s going to pay my school fees. He was sending me money every week. He was paying for my test book, even my hostel fee. He paid for everything. The problem is that I never loved him. And I was just appreciating his good deed. On my final year, he said I should come after my last paper. And I knew if I go there, he’s going to propose. So I tell him that I will come the next morning. And I pack my stuff in the night and run away early morning.”
The story has since generated mixed reactions online, with some sympathising with her fear and uncertainty, while others questioned the morality of accepting long-term support without clarifying boundaries.
