A medical doctor recently shared a remarkable story about integrity involving a colleague who was mistakenly credited with ₦99 million as salary arrears. The incident, which occurred in 2024 under the previous Edo State administration, has since gone viral on social media.
The Mistaken Payment
According to Dr. @DoctorCruise on X (formerly Twitter), his colleague was shocked to find ₦99 million in his account, credited as salary arrears. Recognizing the unusual nature of the transaction, he sought advice from Dr. Cruise, who immediately urged him to return the money.
Reporting to Authorities
The doctors proceeded to meet with the Accountant General (ARD) of Edo State, who confirmed the payment was a mistake and advised the colleague to refund the money. Following this, they reported the issue to the state’s Department of Finance and Accounts.
Banking Hurdles
The Director of Finance and Accounts (DFA) accompanied them to the bank to process the refund. However, the transfer could not be completed immediately due to interbank limitations and account restrictions. This necessitated the involvement of the state accountant general, who personally intervened to resolve the matter.
The bank required explicit authorization from the doctor to remove the funds, which he provided. It took several weeks before the ₦99 million was finally returned to the government.
Recognition Still Pending
While the matter was resolved legally and ethically, Dr. Cruise noted that his colleague has yet to receive his rightful gratuity payment. He expressed hope that the current Edo State government would one day recognize his colleague’s integrity and dedication.
A Lesson in Integrity
This incident has sparked online conversations about honesty, responsibility, and the rare act of returning such a significant sum of money voluntarily. It stands as a reminder that integrity often comes with challenges, yet earns respect and admiration in the long run.
