Nigerian Woman Sparks Debate Over ₦100,000 Bridal Asoebi, Friendship Strain

A Nigerian lady has ignited heated conversations online after sharing how a disagreement over bridal asoebi strained her friendship with a bride she supported generously.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the woman narrated that she was invited to join her friend’s bridal asoebi for a wedding, with the fabric reportedly priced at ₦100,000. She said she politely declined the offer, explaining that she does not buy bridal asoebi as a personal principle.

According to her, the decision was not rooted in stinginess but in her long-held belief that bridal asoebi should be freely given, not sold to friends.

Despite not wearing the asoebi, the woman stated that on the wedding day, she gifted the bride an envelope containing more than ₦100,000 in cash, which the bride happily accepted at the event.

However, days after the ceremony, the situation took a different turn.

The woman revealed that she began hearing negative remarks allegedly made about her by the bride, suggesting displeasure over her refusal to buy the asoebi. When she confronted the bride directly, the bride reportedly admitted she was unhappy about it.

This admission, according to the lady, has since strained their friendship.

She further disclosed that she has only worn asoebi twice in her entire life—and never paid for it—describing herself as “old school.” In her view, charging friends hefty sums for bridal asoebi defeats the purpose of celebration and support.

She questioned when and how it became normal for Nigerian brides to sell asoebi at such high prices, especially to close friends who still show up and give financial gifts.

Her post has since sparked mixed reactions online.

While many users supported her stance, arguing that cash gifts should matter more than fabric, others insisted that buying asoebi is a sign of loyalty, unity, and emotional support for the bride.
