A Nigerian woman has triggered intense reactions online after recounting how she lost her newly purchased iPhone XR in broad daylight—an experience many Nigerians say is painfully familiar.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the lady narrated that the incident occurred at Ikorodu Garage while she accompanied her mother to Oshodi market. According to her, she was seated under a canopy, casually scrolling through her phone, when a man approached her with a request.
The stranger claimed his phone had run out of battery and said he urgently needed to make a call. She initially declined, explaining that she had no airtime. However, the man quickly brought out a ₦200 MTN recharge card and insisted on loading it himself if she would just lend him her phone.
Trusting his explanation, she handed over the device.
She explained that while pretending to place the call, the man began to walk away slowly. At first, she didn’t think much of it—until suspicion crept in. The moment she stood up, the stranger suddenly took off at full speed, disappearing into the crowd with her phone.
The story has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy, shock, and frustration over how common such scams have become, especially in busy areas like Lagos.
Several users shared similar near-miss experiences. One commenter wrote, “This was exactly how they almost collected my phone at Ojota. If not for someone shouting, I for don cry today.” Another added, “Being nice in Lagos will humble you. Learn to say no.”
The lady admitted the experience was a hard lesson but said she shared her story to warn others. She hopes her experience will serve as a reminder to remain cautious and never hand over personal belongings to strangers—no matter how convincing they may seem.
