A Nigerian man has shared a personal and frightening experience of how he lost his phone to area boys in Lagos, a story that has since resonated with many social media users who say they have faced similar situations.
According to the man, the incident happened in 2019, shortly after he purchased a new Tecno phone. He explained that he was on a public bus heading to a vigil in Yaba when his ordeal began.
While seated in the bus, he received a prank call from his friends, which momentarily distracted him. That brief moment was all a phone snatcher needed, as the thief quickly grabbed the phone and disappeared.
Describing the experience as heart-stopping, the man revealed that he instinctively jumped out of the bus through the window in an attempt to retrieve his phone. Unfortunately, his effort was in vain. Despite calling out for help from people around the area, no one came to his rescue.
Left with no option, he said he eventually trekked a long distance back home later that night.
The unpleasant experience did not end there. He further recounted that about a week later, after purchasing another phone, he had another unsettling encounter while returning home around 11 p.m.
According to him, a strange man suddenly approached and asked if he was a LASU student. When he responded that he was not, the man went on to ask if someone had sent him to collect information on him.
Although nothing was stolen during the second incident, the encounter left him shaken and feeling naïve. He said the experiences taught him important lessons about staying alert and being cautious when moving around unfamiliar areas, especially at night.
The story has since sparked conversations online, with many social media users sharing their own encounters with area boys in Lagos and other cities, highlighting the recurring issue of street crime in urban areas.
