A Nigerian man, Kolawole Ajayi, has taken social media by storm after revealing that he quit his teaching job in Nigeria to pursue a suya business in London.
In a now-viral interview video shared on TikTok by @Onijekujelondon, Ajayi opened up about his journey from the classroom to the streets of London, where he now prepares and sells the popular Nigerian delicacy.
According to him, he worked as a teacher in Nigeria for 13 years, while suya making started as a side hustle. Over time, the business grew beyond expectations.
“I was doing that for like 13 years since it was a side hustle for me. I was cooking and doing YouTube videos, and later I was doing catering for people, barbecue for people,” he explained.
Ajayi said the turning point came when he realised that his income from suya was already half of his teaching salary, despite being part-time.
“So when my passive income was half of what my salary was, I decided to leave my nursery job and take this as a full-time business,” he added.
Since fully committing to the suya business, Ajayi has faced his own share of challenges. He recounted a memorable incident where strong wind blew away his carefully prepared suya pepper, reminding him that entrepreneurship comes with unpredictable hurdles.
Despite the setbacks, his story has inspired many Nigerians online, sparking conversations about career shifts, side hustles, and the courage it takes to start over in a new country.
